The Eggs on the Floor
Updated: Jul 19, 2019
I remember, on our Life Change Experiment, standing in the kitchen of a Hollywood self-help devotee. Like many ‘self helpies’ she wanted to make a difference in the world. Do big things. Yet struggling to make a difference even in her own life.
As we were talking about her frustrations, she accidentally knocked a dozen eggs off the bench. Exploding all over her shiny floor, it was the last straw. Her face dropped and she unloaded a lifetime of hurt and regret in one long sentence without a pause. Finishing in utter desperation with: "What am I meant to be doing with my life? I can’t find my purpose!!"
So many of us get caught up looking for that ‘BIG ONE’. That life-defining purpose that we think will justify our existence and fulfil us. But does it really exist? Was there really some mystical grand plan that the big guy upstairs was waiting for her to get right.
Of course, the answer - in that moment - was sitting in a sticky mess on the floor.
The hot sun beating through the 40ft windows, baking it into the beginnings of a custard pie.
"Sometimes, I wonder.. ", I said trying to be serious, "If our big purpose in life is to see what needs to be done in this very moment, the proverbial eggs on the floor...". We both burst out laughing and realized the sticky, inconvenient truth.
Forget about saving the world or looking for that big 'life’s path’ feeling. What if you made a a little space in your heart and started to notice all the broken eggs on the floor that God is hoping you might tend to first.
LUKE said “If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you won’t be honest with greater responsibilities.
When we are too busy watching the horizon for glory and purpose, the eggs left on the floor start to stink.
So, what are your eggs on your floor? A relationship, a child who needs your attention, a friend who needs help, a house that needs to be straightened-up, a healthier way of living or finally sitting down for that time of silence to hear God’s voice? Where can you pick up the eggs and BRING SOME LIGHT?
The world is full of dark places and broken people (including me). Let's not pretend there are not eggs all over the floor. I know there are.
And what a light we could shine: by being the ones who will do what others won't. Sure beats masking
Sure beats masking the smell with 'Febreeze'!
